Hex Head Bolts & Cap Screws
Hex Bolt: A headed fastener designed to be used with a nut to clamp two or more parts together. The bolt is inserted through unthreaded holes, and tightening the nut creates the clamping force.
Hex Cap Screw: A headed fastener with precisely formed threads and bearing surfaces, designed to be tightened into a tapped (threaded) hole or used with a nut when needed. It can be tightened by its head, not just the nut.
Thread length is usually as per ASME B18.2.1 which states that Hex Head Cap Screws & Bolts 6” and under shall have a thread length that is twice the diameter + 1/4” and lengths 6 1/2” and over will have a thread length that is twice the diameter + 1/2.” For Full Thread Bolts, see Hex Tap Bolts.
